Experienced Family Mediator

About Amy Robertson, Victoria BC Family Mediator

My extensive experience and strong financial background inform a practical, client-centred approach to helping couples navigate separation and divorce through a more affordable process. I provide the structure, information and perspective you need to make informed decisions and reach practical agreements.

Why I Chose Family Mediation

I chose family mediation because I believe separating couples deserve a process that helps them make thoughtful decisions about their family and future, without making an already difficult transition harder than it needs to be. I find it deeply rewarding to make a difference in people’s lives by helping them find a path forward that works for them and their families.

Expertise and Thought Leadership

Amy is a published author and respected voice in family mediation. Her expertise has led to invitations to speak on panels and at conferences, as well as to train lawyers and mediators across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Amy is particularly known for redesigning the family mediation process to better support separating couples who choose to mediate without having lawyers participate in the mediation sessions. Her approach recognizes that family mediation should not be a one-day marathon. Instead, she has developed a practical, structured and proportionate process that gives separating couples the time and space to work through the many decisions involved in creating a comprehensive and workable separation agreement.

Amy drew on her extensive experience as a family mediator, combined with her previous career as a Strategic Change and Process Improvement Consultant, to develop this more streamlined and client-centred approach to family mediation.

My Credentials

My Story

I have known since I was a young adult that I wanted to be a mediator. It has always felt like a calling to me. What I was less certain about was when to make the change. In 2006, I made a significant personal and professional decision to leave a successful career in management consulting with a leading professional services firm and pursue mediation, despite genuinely enjoying my work and colleagues.

My goal was to support families through challenging times. After years of further education, training and experience, I founded Amy Robertson Mediation Services in 2014 and began mediating exclusively. Since then, I have had the privilege of conducting more than 1,300 mediations and refining my client-centred approach to family mediation.

I have been featured on Mediate.com, Family Mediation Canada, Mediate BC and the Academy of Professional Family Mediators, as well as published in Douglas Magazine, The Scrivener and two books that were part of a global collaboration with other mediators from around the world.

What My Clients Have to Say

My Approach to Family Mediation

I know from working with families that separation can be stressful and overwhelming. People are often faced with many decisions and tasks at a time when they may be unsure about what needs to be done or the best way forward.

My client-centered approach is designed to provide structure and guidance while recognizing that every family is different. I help clients identify the decisions that need to be addressed, understand their options and make informed choices about their future. My goal is to create a process that is practical, focused and proportionate to each family’s circumstances, resulting in agreements that both spouses can live with and that remain workable as their lives change.

Family Mediation Canada, Mediate BC and other organizations have requested that Amy design and deliver courses on the topis of Family and Workplace Mediation and Conflict Resolution.

Access to Justice

I believe access to family mediation should be timely, affordable and responsive to the circumstances of each family. I have volunteered considerable time learning about and supporting Access to Justice initiatives in BC, including chairing a steering committee and working alongside judges, lawyers, mediators, counsellors and government professionals.

This experience has reinforced my belief that access to justice is not only about reducing costs. It is also about giving people meaningful choices in how they resolve their disputes and creating a process that allows them to move forward with their lives without unnecessary time, expense or complexity. My family mediation process has been designed with these goals in mind.
